Big Spider

Big Spider

Someone knocked on the door but I didn't see anyone when I opened the door, but I looked up and saw this giant spider in the door way. This sucker was huge! It looked like he was clutching a fly and took off. I barely managed to get this shot before he disappeared.

Are you afraid of spiders? If not, then what are you afraid of?

Calling in Sick

How long do you practice your "I'm sick speech" along with raspy voice before you actually call in? Or How long do you THINK about calling in sick before you do? When you aren't sick!

Big Bear Weekend!

I'm heading to Big Bear! First time that we have had a tournament there and we have plenty planned besides softball: cruising the lake, some BBQ, and hanging out at the cabin!

Sometimes we can't tell which team will show up for the opponents. By this I mean whether it's a Gold team, Silver, or other. Some leagues in an attempt to spare the feelings of the kids that didn't make the "A" team (IMO), give their teams interesting names to disguise their true status.

An example is: The white team, blue team, and red team. Another league uses spirit and freedom; Lightning, Thunder and Storm; Diamond team, and Emerald team; Black or Blue Team. While others use "A", and "B." Our league used to name them the All-Star team, and the Tournament Team.

Everyone would ask, "Which is the GOLD team?" This year, we just decided to name the teams Gold All-Stars, Silver All-Stars, and Bronze All-Stars; plain and simple.

What do you think about this?

Jail Math

Paris Hilton was just released from jail after serving "five days." What? You say that she was only in there for THREE, right? You are correct!

Apparently, if you check-in at 11:59 p.m., then that's counted as a day served, and if you leave at 12:01 a.m., then that's counted as a full day, too.

Medical reasons were cited for her release and that she was crying that it was too cold, and it was just awful being in jail. Remember that she wasn't in the general population but in the SPECIAL NEEDS section; a section reserved for law enforcement and public administrators, etc. Now she has to rough it out at her home for 40 days with an ankle bracelet. As is human nature, you don't really realize how easy you have/had it, until things change a little.

What offenses do you think serving HOUSE ARREST is appropriate?

Kidnapped Woman Found

My friend called me to tell me that they had found the girl that was taken from the parking lot. Have you noticed that many of the surveillance video from places where crimes take place are so bad you can't see crap except if it's on CSI then you can magnify the video and read the engraving on their watch?

She told me that she felt that if you are going to have a camera that it should be of good quality and be "able to see $hit" other than a blob. Anyway, too bad she was found dead. Good news is that they arrested someone.

Smog Test Required

I opened up my gmail and there was my reminder to pay my car registration. I'd given myself a couple of days warning and went on line to pay it. But, I didn't have the smog check, ugh. So, I call the service department down at Nissan and ask if they can test me at 11:15 a.m. Sure, come on in.

I get there and the I'm quoted $10 higher than the advertisement, so I had to point that out. Seems their computer was wrong, and they apologized by giving me a free car wash and a huge apple fritter. I wander around and of course the vultures ask me if I want to take a test-drive, but I decline. I grab a brochure and took a picture of the wall of IDs for the sales people in the lobby.

My car passed it's smog test but the weird thing were the numbers:

The car was allowed to get 47 HC PPM and the measurement was 1.
On CO Emission allowed to get 0.60 and the measurement was 0.00.
on NO (PPM) 494 max allowed and the measurement was 4.

For a seven year old car it did really well, or maybe the machine wasn't connected right. Shhhh!

I Had Wings and Things for lunch and ate my apple fritter, since I was already late anyway :)

New Car Features

The dealer tried to sell me a car today. It's been seven years exactly since I bought my car and he wanted me to trade in my old Pathfinder. He walked around my car and said that I took good care of it, and he couldn't believe how old it was. He pointed out that the new Pathfinders have:
  • GPS dash
  • Phone in steering wheel
  • iPod, Media jacks, Hard Drive
  • Compact Flash input
  • His and Her temperature control
  • Proximity keyless entry
  • Live Traffic Updates
  • Passenger sensitive airbag smarts

He told me that he would throw in a mountain bike and a customized 10'x10' tent for MY NEW PATHFINDER. That I could drive it off the lot NOW. LOL. Talk about the hard sell, huh?

How do I get out of this easily? I just say, "I don't think the wife would let me spend her money without having her here." He gets the hint.

Scooter Libby

The news reported that he was sentenced to "30 months" in jail. Uh...come on, just say 2 and half years! lol Did you have to think for a second how long that was?

At what point should you stop using the months thing, especially with babies?

Translators

Heather was typing up a bulletin and wanted to post it in many different languages. She loaded up a translator and typed what she wanted and cut and paste into her bulletin.

I ask, "How do you know it didn't translate to: 'I lick your snot vigorously?'" We laugh and test this out with Spanish to English and vice-versa. Those free translators don't work well. They pick up on the noun verb thing but mess up on the meaning just a tad.

But it was fun just to try all the different languages...

Do you use or have you used those translators?

My Rustless Fogless Mirror

This is my shaving mirror! The packaging said that it was rustless, and fogless. Neither of which turned out to be true. The little razor holders are bent from it falling on the tile on occasion.

I think about this almost each time that I shave in the morning, and I have to spray water on it so that I can see something.

After practice today, I'm going to Bed, Bath & Beyond and getting a new one along with other stuff I need, and I'm asking the salesperson that if it fogs/rusts up, if I can return it.

Update: I was told that I could take this back and get a new one. :)

What do you think about when showering?

My Carne Asada Chips

These are my carne asada chips! I think they came out quite tasty for a first time. It's just the cleaning up part that I don't like.

It looks like I have enough left overs to make some later. You want some?

Co-Champs

We just got back from the tournament, and Heather zonked the whole time after dinner. She didn't remember that she fell asleep, and 125 miles later, we're home!

Remember how I mentioned that they had to win three straight to win it all? They won two (8-5, 7-0) and tied the final in the championship game 0-0 after 7 innings. The fields didn't have lights so the girls ended up co-champs.

One option was to pack everyone up and go to another field where they had lights and do the International Tie-Breaker. The managers agreed before the game that they wouldn't continue. The ceremony was very quick and everyone left in record time!

Championship Sunday

I had a super omelette and french toast, while Heather had several bowls fruit loops.

Heather's changing into her "Championship Blue" uniform at this very second. Had to pry her off the computer, whether it's photoshop, or tinkering with the photos, it's time to go win three games back-to-back to win it all.

Saturday Night

Wait till I get back...

Sam Can't Braid Hair

Heather Left Field

Heather asked me to braid her hair and I could only get two little twists in it. Luckily, another team member helped her out! Breakfast was good and I had Heather bring up two bananas for the game.

The girls won both their games this morning (4-0, and 9-2). Heather did well, catching a fly in left field, and stealing some bases. Her coach had her "go slappy." She smacked it between the 3-4 hole, and easily beat out the throw. She gets excited when she gets to bat lefty...Heather being a slapper

Now, it's homework time, and they get 45 minutes of pool time at 6:00 p.m. We almost forgot her suit, but I went through the tournament must-have list and got one before we left. (we have photo)

We play at 2:15 p.m. tomorrow and hope to win three in a row to win this tournament. I think I'm in charge of buying the little rolls for the girls to have lunch. I'll have to get them before the game.

Heather's Street Photography

We googled up a Pizza Hut nearby and ended up on State College Blvd. They told us that we would have a 20 minute wait, so Heather went shooting. Lots of people just stared at us but I told Heather that she'd never see them again anyway so just shoot and have fun. She did just that by ditching the 50mm...She's already decided that her favorite lense is the 28-135mm, because she can zoom and it's not too big or heavy. We'll post HER primo shots here. Or at least the thumbnails.

On the way back we were 2 for 4 on how many people we could get to wave at us if we honked and waved as if we knew them! We definitely FOUND something to keep us entertained. And geez, she left me a couple of slices of pizza.

Back in the room Heather loaded up Photoshop CS3 and I couldn't get her off my laptop! But, now it's time for sleep! Oh no, I have to do her hair in the morning -- eeek! Wish her luck tomorrow.

Until tomorrow night!

PYL Hotel Time

Heather and I loaded up the truck and headed off to PYL. She turns on her iPod and zonks out, but according to her, she's just listening to music with her eyes closed -uh huh.

I tap her on the leg as we get here. She loads up the little cart to bring our stuff up and she lays claim to the bed but I think she'll lose that one. There's a nice little sofa for her :)

We play two games tomorrow back-to-back and then we're finished for the day. One of the parents said they would broadcast the game on the net, but let's see. What's there to do here? Disneyland?

FREE BEER until 7:00pm. I got up to the bar and say to the girl..."I hear there's free beer! Is that true? Only if you're a guest." "Ok, I'll be a guest, then...whatcha got!?" She looks at me with that "is he a guest or not?" I ask for a heineken. The girl smiles but doesn't know if she just gave some guy a free beer or not. This won't make any sense at all to you unless you know me, btw. Heather got a coke and just grinned all the way back to the table. We got some of the free food, but Heather still wants pizza. So guess what I'm gonna do...

Late Night TV

IF you watch late night tv. Who do you watch? Jay Leno or David Letterman, and why?

San Diego Skyline

San Diego City at Night Taken By Sam Shuey
I arrived a little early and set up. I selected my little hide away park that not very many people know about on Coronado Island. I used the 16-36mm lens f8, 30 sec. I had a lot of shots with streaks from the planes landing and tour boats going by. They looked kind of funny. I tried the 70 but I didn't get enough of the buildings and decided I liked this one the best. It's not the best, but I'll try again until I get it.

No editting except that I cropped to get the panorama look. If anyone wants the the full size one let me know...IM me or comment me with contact information. Maybe someone will touch it up for me :)

Daily Recap

Had sushi for lunch with a friend. Found out that both my new contracts are in the final stages in appropriations so I'm excited/anxious. Got some starbucks, took that photo that I've been wanting to take.

Looking at the photo, I should have stood on the other side of the nurse. You can't even tell I'm wearing a green shirt. Seems the color got lost with the black sailor. The girl that I got to take the picture said "You're so dirty!" then asked if I would take one of her doing the same thing pose. Funny.

Went to Nelson's photo and bought a new camera strap. The owner gave me a catalog and a good discount on some "memory mates." She remembered me, and it's been forever since I had been there.

Extended lunch breaks are great aren't they?

It's a nice clear day...I'm going to Coronado to take some pictures of the bay and city lights. Wanna join me?

Heather's Team Photo

The Moon

I noticed that the moon was full today, and I tried again to take some photos. The last time I tried they weren't very good. I'll keep trying until I get it right. This is time this is what I came up with for the night. I was surprised that the best shots were the ones with the higher aperature. The lower aperature shots had too much of a haze around the moon and I couldn't see any detail.

Since I was out there, I took some with the shutter open for 30 seconds and a helicopter decided to fly by just as the shutter was open. But it looks ok anyway. Those stars moved a lot in 30 seconds, well actually we did.

Oh, I used a 70-200mm at 200mm, ISO 100, F4.5, 1/1000 for the moon shot. For this streaking shot, I used F2.8 for 30 seconds. I didn't want to use the shutter release so that's why I didn't use a higher F Stop, or expose longer.

Random Photo

I took this photo earlier this month because I thought it was funny. I labeled it the ghetto ice cream truck. Do you like the "spinners" on the wheels, or the iron bars on the order window?

Words

Topic tonight at $1 Fish Taco Day, was words that we like. I don't know what came over me but I spit out - "Sentient." But then we shifted to words that just sound weird. "NEVERTHELESS" What the heck is that?

Anyway, what word do you like?

Bonita Valley Takes FOUR teams to Finals

10U Gold wins 6-1 over Rancho Bernardo, 12U Gold wins 11-1 over Poway, 14U Gold (Heather's team) versus PQ 10-3, 10U Silver takes 2nd, 8U Gold ties for 4th, 12U Silver gets 2nd, 12U Bronze gets 4th. Holy Cow...we have a lot of teams!

Heather did well this tournament. If she got on base, she's gonna be a thief! She stole a lot! I stood on the third base side and took a series of shots with her leaving from 1st all the way to 3rd. [Insert photos here] This is the first time that Heather has been on a team that has won THIS tournament, in the last five attempts.

...saved a little girl from getting squashed by an SUV backing up. I honked and held it down and her mom QUICKLY rescued her. I got a lot of stares from the spectators but I saw her mom mouth "Thank You!" Heather was with me in the car listening to her iPod, and we couldn't believe that it almost happened in front of our eyes.

The BBQ was yummy; all kinds of food there. I got stuffed and feel like a beached whale. Good Night. Crawling in bed now...

Here we are ready to head out for the day, and I turn, and snap this photo of Heather. I love the un-posed off guard look that she gave me.
What do think?

Daily Recap

Heather's team won their "pool" by winning all three games. Having an 8:00 a.m. game, allowed the team to have the rest of the day off, and come back tomorrow for the final two games.

What do I eat at softball tournaments? There's always the BBQ going for those hamburgers, hot dogs. Today I stuffed myself with watermelon and pineapple sprinkled with chili powder, lime stuff. It seems it's a tradition at the tournament between games. I shoot some photos and then grab some fruit between innings! It's very yummy. The only thing to worry about is to make sure that I didn't pour the whole bottle on the slice. Let's see...I did end up getting a strawberry lemon raspado.

The temperature was about 72 or so; nice and sunny, not hot but just right. One of the teams gave me some flavored water. The first time I'd had some and it tasted pretty good. I'll have to try some of the other flavors.

I ALMOST lost my camera bag! I left it in the dugout after the game was finished. I thought to myself, as Heather would say, "Oh 'S' Hit'" I called someone that was closer to the dugout and asked if they had gotten it, but there was another team there. I nonchalantly walked into the PYL (a rival from up north) dugout and spotted the camera bag; it had been moved and opened, and hoped that I hadn't lost anything. Luckily, EVERYTHING was there. Just when I thought I'd lost everything...Big Sigh!

Overall a good day for our league, four of our the six teams made it to championship day. Heather and I are grabbing breakfast before we go and see if they can win two more games! Oh, Heather has to relinquish her title as "shorty" since she's grown a few inches!

Self-Portrait

I'm sitting at the epicenter of the four fields at PQ. We don't start playing for another 30 minutes or so, and I just sitting here. I could get hit by a ball, but I'm zoning out taking pictures of the bugs in the grass; some are even crawling on me and I just stare at them. I tell myself that the yelling and cheering would alert me to something about to peg me. Several people pass by and tell me that it's weird to be shooting photos of the grass. But, I look at the little bugs and pretend that they are in a giant forest that might take days to traverse. Then, I just turn the camera and shoot this one shot with a 50mm lens. This is what the little bugs see through their telescope - The invader in their path out in the middle of the giant forest...their forest.

Wanna fly with me someday?

Yes, that's an invitation!!!

When I was in college, I took some aviation classes. Mostly the ground training, and even got to visit the air traffic control at Brown Field in San Diego. It is a small airport next to the border and I got to direct traffic. I was a little nervous giving the commands but it was fun! Trying to manage a lot of things going on at once. I got an "A" in the classes but the people that actually WERE going to be ATC didn't. Just think about that when you're a passenger in a plane someday!

Earlier this year I expressed interest in getting my pilot's license, and J.F, told me that he wouldn't mind taking me up! Today I saw him and he gave me all the details and it seems that in mid-June, I'll be going up in the plane. Got my velcro ready to secure the camera, so you'll be coming with me. I'm getting updated FAA study materials next week! I can't wait!!!

1st 2007 All-Star Tournament

This is the 1st step in trying to get to nationals again. The first tune-up tournament where the teams find out what they need to work on and get the first game jitters out of the way. I'll be following my daughter's team - the 14U Gold team. Their first game is at 11:30 a.m. PDT. I think that one of the parents will be broadcasting but I'm not sure.

Tonight I went to get some team photos and watch the first game. The 12U Gold won easily. Had dinner in the Mira Mesa area and then headed home. Someone made some new images for the game broadcast so let's see how things work. :)

Wish us luck!
